Long-latency Control Dependence: Does it Really Matter?

چکیده
Branch Prediction is an important factor in achieving high performance in modern microprocessors. Branch predictors are used to keep pipeline filled with instructions before the outcome of the branch condition is known. On the other hand, branch misprediction halts fetching of useful instructions. The situation becomes worse when we take into account the cache pollution a branch misprediction causes. Branches that depend on a long-latency loads take much longer time to resolve. As a result, mispredicting such branch fills up the pipe with a lot of useless instructions. Finally, when the branch resolves the entire start-up latency comes in the critical path. Several recent studies have speculated that such branches are critical for performance. In this paper, we put this debate to rest by showing that these branches are very small in number and do not affect performance.

The editorial is commendable and I agree with many of the points raised. Management is an important aspect of health system strengthening which is often overlooked. In order to build the capacity of management, we need to consider other factors such as, the environment within which managers work, their numbers, support systems and distribution. Effective leadership is an issue which cannot be o...
متن کاملCan tobacco dependence provide insights into other drug addictions?
Within the field of addiction research, individuals tend to operate within silos of knowledge focused on specific drug classes. The discovery that tobacco dependence develops in a progression of stages and that the latency to the onset of withdrawal symptoms after the last use of tobacco changes over time have provided insights into how tobacco dependence develops that might be applied to the s...

متن کاملPluri, Multi-, Trans- Meta- and Interdisciplinary nature of LIS. Does it really matter?
The field of LIS is beset by recurrent debates as to its disciplinary status. For decades, the interdisciplinary nature of information science has been upheld without much proof from the ground. But if LIS is not an interdiscipline, is it then a meta-, a transa pluri-, a multior simply a discipline? The different proposals for qualifying the nature of LIS or for delineating its frontiers sugges...
